SmartSpeed primary or command units operate as the command center for SmartSpeed Systems.
Command units have two in-built radio devices:
- IEEE 802.15.4 - to communicate between timing units; and
- Bluetooth - to communicate to a mobile device (SmartSpeed app)
In order to communicate with the primary unit, each timing unit must be:
- Set to the same radio channel as the command unit; and
- Within range of the primary unit.
To connect with the primary device, you must set up this connection on your iOS or Android device via Bluetooth. It is therefore important that the mobile device running the SmartSpeed or SmartSpeed Plus app remains within Bluetooth range of the primary device.
Depending on which SmartSpeed system you have will determine how your gates communicate.
SmartSpeed Plus | This system works by assigning one of the timing units as the primary device that will communicate with your mobile device. This primary device will then communicate with all other timing units. |
SmartSpeed Dash | This system, similar to the SmartSpeed Plus, will assign one of the timing units as the primary device, which will then communicate with all other timing units on the same channel. |
SmartSpeed Pro | The SmartSpeed Pro system includes a SmartHub device that acts as the command unit. The SmartHub will then communicate with all timing units on the same channel. |
The range between devices will differ between SmartSpeed systems, as well as the number of devices that can communicate with each other. Refer to SmartSpeed Systems Overview for specifics.
